Made redundant but offered self employment in my original position

Made redundant but offered self employment in my original position The company I worked for recently made my position redundant, although the then went onto say I could work for them in my original position but on a self - employed basis. I just wanted to know if this was legal, as I thought you were made redundant because the work wasnt there. i was only with them for five months though.
