restructured / demoted

hi my work changed my role and down sized the number of staff for the role. it was changed from 6 staff to 4.

i got a letter telling me that from the 05th of April, due to selecting the people who filed the new roles buy TIME IN ROLE i was now being placed into a lower grade but would retain my wage and future wage increases. and if one of the new roles became available in the future they would seek to place me in it.

i was off from the 04th till the 17th April. when i returned i was verbally told that due to the rosters not being in place for the new role i would have to stay in my old role till they were done.

do i have to fill this old role or can i just do the new role they gave me?
