Hi,
I work for a company that employs 18,000 people. I'm grade 12.
I've been told that I'm at risk of redundancy and have gone into consultancy.
I was told at the first meeting that my boss and his boss had no input into the
decision to put me at risk, but that it was a board level decision declaring my role
as no longer needed.
I have over 10 years experience and a good record. It was acknowledged at the meeting how hard I work, often out of hours, and that they would struggle
without me. Work colleagues have been shocked at the news.
Given that the board can't possibly know about my day to day work, is this an unfair dismissal?
Thanks for any advice.

Hi
I am sorry to hear that you are under redundancy consultation. As part of the consultation, you should be made aware as to the reason for your redundancy.
For a dismissal to be fair, the reason for the redundancy must be genuine.
It is normal for the Board of Directors to develop strategic plans and it is not unfair dismissal solely because the board made the decision to make your role redundant. In an organisation as large as this (18,000) , you will find that there is many layers of management.
Do bear in mind that your employer is obliged to look for suitable alternative work for you within the organisation before a dismissal is made.Clara Buckingham
