I work for a small company that is making 13 redundancies amd all agency and short term contract workers are being laid off before any permanent redundancies.
One s
department with people who were employed by agencies for a dhorter time then me have been given permanent jobs, I have not.
I have been told that I am the only person in the company who knows how to do my particular job and it is doubtful that others will have the time or ability to do it. I have also been told that I will be taken back on a permanent basis in 3 months time.
Approximately 25% of the workforce is going, but as I work in the department performing repairs, inspection and development and that department had been understaffed for the work that exists for at least 8 months, I feel it is very unfair for me to lise my job just because my manager is reluctant to employ people on a permanent basis unless they have been working at the company for at least 2 years. Two people are going from my department, myself being one of them. The second person will probably be the inspector whose job I do during his frequent absences.
Management have told me that all agency staff, (was 3, since the beginning of the week only me) have to go before any permanent people for legal reasons. My job is certainly not redundant and it is extremely unlikely that I would lose it under the criteria for permanent staff. I was employed to replace a permanent staff member who was leaving, but this company always employs people from agencies for between 1 and 3 years before making them permanent. I have only been there 15 months and a manager is attempting to learn part of my job so he can do the most urgent things after I've gone. There are already too many repairs for current staff to handle and most ofg the other people in QA are working on development, essential for future sales. The reason for the redundancies is a shortage of new orders for production plus credit problems.
I thiml that agency staff can be got rid of at any time for no reason and there was no need to give me the week#s notice I have, but is that correct?
It seems so unfair
