Hi
I have just been made redundant and although the company went through an initial consultation meeting and a follow up meeting, certain things are pointing to unfair dismissal.
I was initially called in to an office and told by my manager that my "job was at risk" and was presented a letter inviting me to a meeting 1 week later. At that meeting the company went through the motions of saying that they had looked at alternative employment options and that they couldn't see any way out of the situation.
I gave them some ideas and they went away to look into these suggestions. The next day I was called in to the office again and told that the suggestions I had made were not financially viable and that the company were going to make me redundant.
This was on the 11th Feb.
On the 13th Feb I received a letter stating that I had in fact been made redundant and my notice period would finish on the 10th March. My notice period is 1 month in writing from either side.
I have one major question I need answering please.
I started my job on the 12th March 2007 and just per chance my redundancy notice period will end on the 11th March. Because of this the company are stating that they do not have to pay me any redundancy.
Is it not correct that when the company served me with notice in writing, that the actual notice period begins the day after the letter date. They are saying that they are allowed to backdate the notice period to the meeting (on the 11th) where they verbally told me that I was to be made redundant.
It all seems a little fortunate that my notice period ends the day before my second anniversary with the company.
When does redundancy notice take effect?

When does redundancy notice take effect?

Hi Edbyrne
I am sorry to hear about your situation and hope I can help with this.
As your notice of dismissal on the grounds of redundancy was verbally issued to you 11th February 2009 , the notice will run from the start of the following day. Therefore your months notice should run from 12th February 2009, taking you to 12th March 2009.
It is worth checking your contract of employment in case your written particulars state otherwise.
If you need to print off information on this point, please click here and you will be taken to the BERR website
I hope this helps. Please let us know how things develop.Last edited by Employee Advisor; 02-03-09 at 09:41 PM.

So, if it starts officially on the 12th Feb does it therefore end on the 12th March?
