Default Office Closure - Redundancy Pool?

I would appreciate some advice please. I work for a Government department and my office is closing. All staff in the office irrespective of grade/role are to be made surplus/redundant. However, 6 people are ring-fenced and excluded on the basis that their role will be retained and they will be co-located with another Government office nearby. They are the same grade doing similar/interchangeable work to other members of staff being made redundant. My query is as the office is closing should everyone be included in the redundancy pool? Thank you

No. Your question appears to be the wrong way around. It ought to be why didn't everyone else get a chance to go for the retained jobs if they are that similar. Which leads me to wonder if yours is one of the retained jobs and you want redundancy? If so, then the answer is probably that redundancy isn't a right.

To clarify, mine is not one of the retained jobs. The office closure decision as the starting point clearly signalled a redundancy situation in the absence of alternative employment. What is puzzling is why 6 members of staff who share the same skills/experience and grade were not included in the redundancy pool and this has led to ill feeling that others weren't given a chance to go for the retained jobs.

Yes...the answer given is that they are not obliged to include them as they will be relocated to do face to face customer service whereas others being made redundant do the same customer service work in the back office but not face to face.

So - not similar jobs? In which case they appear to have given a valid reason for the difference?
