    Default Office relocation

    Hi

I have been informed that my company has decided to move our office to a new location (19 miles away by route planner, 15 or so in literal distance). The move increases my journey from 45 to 70 minutes each way - the new journey is much more prone to traffic problems too, so 70mins is the best case scenario. This is typical for the other members of staff being moved.

My contract stats 'You may also be required to relocate permanently given reasonable notice: within a 5 mile radius of your curent place of work; or subject to your consent, anywhere else within the UK'

I'm not happy to do this journey on a regular basis so will be asking to work at home 2-3 days a week on a permanent basis. If this does not happen, what position am I left in? Lump it or leave? They are not offering redundancy, should they be?

    Thanks for any guidance

This is a grey area. Despite what your contract says, 19 miles is well within the usual "fair travel to work" distance that a tribunal would tend to consdier fair enough - especially these days. If they told you to lump it, it may be a risky proposition to win a tribunal, and not a route, based on that risk, that I would recommend. Other than traffic - is there any reason why you cannot make the journey?

Absolutely not, it just falls outside of the amount of time and travel that I personally am willing to do every day (for this job anyway!).

I appreciate your advice, thank you - you have helped clarify where I stand
