    Default Redundancy

Hi, have just been told that the hospital cleaning company that I work for is going over to full-time work. As I work only weekends and don't want to work full-time, am I likely to be offered redundancy?

Ermm - lets go back a stage here before we go running off with redundancies (although the answer is yes, if your job disappears then you should be offered redundancy). But what do you mean itis going over to full-time work? Are you saying that they are now refusing to employ part-time workers? That all staff must work full-time or not at all. Because if so, that would be a far more interesting question, since this may be indirect sex discrimination and worth a lot more than redundancy money! Would you like to provide a few more details of what is going on here?

thanks for your reply, things are only at a preliminary stage at the moment (my "running off with redundancies" was pure panic!) At the meeting I asked one of the managers if the new shift patterns listed in the memo they handed out meant that the company was thinking of doing away with weekend work altogether and he said yes. He also yes when I asked him if that meant that there was going to be no part-time work either. The indirect sex discrimination is an interesting idea and provides valuable ammunition, so thanks for that.

If they are disposing of weekend work then that would be ok (although please remind me not to get sick at the weekend if they aren't cleaning hospitals at weekends!). But if they are refusing to employ part-0time workers or refusing to provide part-time hours, that is an entirely different thing.
