Thank you for your question.
When your employer makes you redundant, they are required to follow certain
procedures.
They must give you notice of the redundancy. The minimum period of notice is:
• one week if you have worked for your employer for one month but less
than two years or two weeks if you have worked for your employer for two whole years;
• one additional week for each further whole year's employment up to a
maximum of twelve weeks' notice in total.
Your contract of employment may state that you are entitled to more notice than the statutory minimum notice, although it should not be less.
E.g if you have worked for one day less than 8 years and your contract stated that you were entitled to 1 month's notice, you would be given 7 weeks notice.
Sometimes an employer will require that you work out your notice period although they can sometimes pay you in lieu of notice (PILON). In this case, you would be paid the wages that you would have received had you been allowed to work out the notice period.
I hope this helps answer your question.Clara Buckingham
