I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on my situation.
The company I work for announced redundancies a number of months ago. I was then placed into a 'reduced requirement' pool with other employees whose skill sets matched. The pool size was 14 people for the 7 jobs which were available. We were given a deadline of end October to apply for voluntary redundancy.
As time has moved on 7 people in my pool have applied for and been granted voluntary redundancy which resolved the pool. This resolution was announced company wide 2 weeks ago and as per the company redundancy policy the 7 remaining people in the pools would be appointed one of the 7 jobs going forward.
I have now been told that I am underqualified for one of these roles and should never have been placed in that particular pool in the first place.
I was then told (verbally) not to worry because I do have a job but they are unable to tell me which one or in which department. I asked for this in writing as was told they couldn't put anything in writing as the other job options may not be available to me for 7 weeks. This 7 week period takes me beyond the deadline to apply for voluntary redundancy.
I have found the whole redundancy process very stressful and was relieved when the pool was resolved and now find that it isn't.
The thing is, I can't see any roles on the structure (other than the ones in my pool) which my skills match and I'm concerned that any offer in the future may not be suitable for me and by which time I can't apply for voluntary redundancy so I will have to resign.
Can anyone offer any advice? Right now I feel like my only option is to apply for voluntary redundancy before the end of October deadline to protect me from being placed into a role that I am unable to carry out.

Well, the choice isn't between applying for voluntary redundancy or resigning, for starters! Why wiould you have to resign? But the most obvious advice is to talk to your employer. Voluntary redundancy is, as it says, voluntary. So there are no rules attached to it, and if the employer wants to make the deadline later for you because of the circumstances, then they can. But I think you may be confused about what voluntary redundancy is. It's voluntary on both sides. So if you are selected for a role which is a suitable alternative role, you can't simply decide that you don't want it and take voluntary redundancy, unless the employer agrees to that. If they don't, the alternative role is your role, and unless you can evidence a claim of unfair dismissal in this, you will not be redundant at all. That is the circumstance in which you would have to resign, if you refused to undertake the role. But you are a long way off any such decision being necessary.

If a future role offered to you isn't suitable, in terms of your skills and experience and terms and conditions, then you would be able to refuse it and in the event of there being nothing else, would be compulsorily redundant. Are you concerned that compulsory redundancy would be on much less favourable terms than the current voluntary offer?
They could extend the deadline for you to apply for voluntary redundancy if they wanted to, but they may not want to offer it to you. Voluntary redundancies resolved the pool you were initially placed in but if they have a suitable job that needs filling you shouldn't assume they'd be happy to pay out voluntary redundancy to you anyway.
