Notice start dates

Hi guys, this is my first post, so i apoligise if something similar has been covered before,

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on the below information?,

My company closed its office on the 4th of June, we were issued with redundancy or alternative placement of work (which was 60 miles away) i opted to take the new place of work on the 4 week trial period, which started on the 7th June, a week and a half into this trial i realised that the position wasnt working out as expected.

Spoke to my line manager on the 16th June and he accepted my situation and asked to confirm this in email and forward a copy to the HR department, a week or so later i got a letter handed to me saying that my commencment date for notice will start on the 28th June, (i dont understand where this date has come from) upon questioning this i was told that they are issuing me with notice not the other way round, can they do this??, surely the day i spoke to my line manager should be the start date of my notice,

If anyone could advise me further on the above i would be very greatful...

I think there was little miscommunication in the process. Though, I'm not sure of the legal formalities that would apply in your area but I would like inform you that there is no question of a notice being handed out during the trial period and on top of that when you had it informed to the concerned authority well in advance. They could do it only they would have mentioned it while they were moving out and provided you with a trial opportunity.
