Posted this in the wrong place before - I'll try again
I've just been made redundant - my contract ended on Friday. Today I have learned that my junior colleague has been given my old job title and responsibilities (and a small pay rise).
I was told that my role would no longer be in the organisational structure, hence the redundancy, so this seems a little off-kilter to me. Any thoughts?
Do you feel that the role your junior colleague is now doing bears more resemblance to your old role than his/her old role? Do you feel he/she should have been made redundant instead?
It could be that the redundancy wasn't genuine however if your junior colleague is now working on his/her own, it sounds as though there was a genuine redundancy situation, so you would instead be claiming that your own selection for redundancy was unfair. You could consider writing and appealing the decision on this basis.
Thanks for your reply. While on a personal level I wouldn't have wanted my junior colleague to be made redundant (he's good at his job), I do think that the possibility should have at least been considered. His new role is my old one - the position that's actually disappeared is his. I don't know what the implications of that are.
Well that certainly sounds unfair then from what you say. Your job is still there, meaning your redundancy isn't genuine and is unfair, and your colleague's job seems to have disappeared, making him redundant. I'd appeal it if I were you on that basis, emphasising any procedural aspects that weren't followed as well as the unfairness of the decisions itself.
You don't mention procedure specifically, but your employer is required to consult with you on an individual basis, and if they'd done so properly about what the structure/responsibilities would be going forward, you would have had an opportunity to point out that your job seemed to be remaining in place.
