Hi,
My department has been through a recent restructure where it was decided that a number of 'heads' had to go this year and next. Out of the pool of employees in my department I have been selected along with 1 other to be made redundant by the end of next year.

I haven't been given any written notice as the exact date has not been confirmed. I am and was on maternty leave when I was informed that my role had been selected for redundancy. My full years maternity leave ends on 1st October 2010. My contract of employment states a 3 month notice period. I am the only female in my department. There was no interview selecion process, the criteria was based on past performance and which role could be moved abroad (in this case they wanted 2 job roles that could be done from another branch in another country). They selected my role although from the pool we have a number of people that do the same job at the same grade.
We are required at times to take on addidtional tasks but they do not form the basis of the role. I was asked to take on an addidtional task whilst I was pregnant so i could work from home, to which I agreed as long as it was temporary and i wouldnt get stuck with it forever as it deviated from my skillset and career focus. I was assured that the 'additional task would be temporary. Now the company are saying my 'role' can be done from anywhere so doesnt need to be in in the UK because of this 'additional task'. However, due to complications with my pregnancy I was on medical leave (bedrest) for 3 months of my pregnancy so could not actually carry out the additional task anyway.

My question is, is this fair? Can employers make me redundant at the end of next year but tell me about this now? Shouldnt they be offering me another post in the UK seeing as there was a candidate pool of 14 staff and atleast 3 of those are at my grade and role? Is there anything that I can do now as I havent been served notice yet but have been verbally informed about the redundancy? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
