Can someone help!
I have been sent a letter stating that my company is closing down in september and offered a job doing the same as i am now but 85 miles away, there is no mention of redundancy in the letter and clearly this is not a suitable alternative to my current job, there are two other staff in the same situation, could someone let me know where i stand with rights and how to ask for redundancy, i have worked there for four years.
Thank You.

Hi
This is potentially a redundancy situation as per the Employment Rights Act 1996
"The requirements for employees to perform work of a specific type or to conduct it at the location in which they are employed have ceased or diminished"
Employment contracts sometimes contain a mobility clause whereby employees can be required to work at another location, avoiding the redundancy. Nevertheless, 85 miles is a long distance so it would be reasonable to refuse the transfer and take redundancy.
It sounds like your employer is offering the job to you as suitable alternative employment to avoid the redundancy. Again, as it is a long distance you could reject the offer on the grounds that the distance to travel is too far. You should put this in writing to your employer.Clara Buckingham
