What the the main steps or best practice procedure that needs to be followed when a member of staff volunteers themselves for redundancy?
Do we need to consult? what needs to be covered and what do we need to have in writing?

Voluntary Redundancy
You should still follow a similar process to redundancy but in order to make voluntary redundancies you will need to vary the process as follows.
Firstly, you will need to ask for volunteers to be made redundant. This should be done after you have defined the selection pool (Stage 1 above). You should then ask all the employees in that pool whether there are any volunteers for redundancy. I would suggest that you should mention at the group meeting that you would be willing to consider requests for voluntary redundancy (Stage 2) and confirm this in the letter sent out at Stage 3. These can be obtained from us by signing up to one of our services.
If employees do volunteer for redundancy you can then use this as your main selection criterion. That is however the only difference in the redundancy process. You will still need to follow the full process both for those employees who are to be made redundant and for those who will remain in your employ.
You should still go through consultation.
